What kind of fence is best for keeping kids safe?
We all want our kids to play outside, but we also want them to be safe. For families with young children, we recommend getting a fence that is at least 3 to 4 feet tall. This is usually tall enough to keep them from wandering towards the street or wilderness.
If you’ve ever played with a toddler, then you know that they love to grab onto stuff and hang on. They can’t hold onto their blanket, but as soon as it’s something they’re not supposed to have, they suddenly develop the grip strength of an olympic rock climber. Thankfully vertical pickets are much harder for a determined toddler to climb than horizontal rails.
Families with older kids or troublesome teenagers might want to go with an aluminum fence at least 6 feet tall. Again, our vertical pickets are very difficult to climb. But you can choose to include pointed finials at the top of the pickets. If you really want to discourage someone sneaking out or in.
However, the open-picket design lets you see your kids playing from the kitchen window or the front yard.
What kind of fence is best for keeping pets contained?
For small dogs and puppies, we recommend choosing the puppy fence style or the XP (eXtra Picket) panels. The puppy fence has tighter spacing at the bottom so nothing can squeeze through. While the XP panels keep those tightly spaced pickets all the way to the top. Tiny dogs like a Chihuahua or Pomeranian can’t escape. They might still bark at strangers passing by, they’ll feel safe within their own yard.
On the other end are massive dogs like the English Mastiff, Saint Bernard, and Newfoundland. I personally have a Borzoi which runs much faster than she can think. And she has busted down a few old wooden fences in her day. But aluminum doesn’t bend or buckle upon such an impact.
What kind of fence is best for safety?
For general safety, the best fences are ones with self-closing gates paired with gravity or magnetic latches. These essentially close the gate beyond you. As one of our past clients put it:
