How strong is aluminum fencing?
Aluminum fencing boasts a high strength-to-weight ratio. So, it can be moved and handled easily, but it’s much harder to deform. The pressure at which a material deforms is called its minimum yield strength (FTY). It is measured in kilopounds (1,000 lbs) per square inch.
Aluminum fencing has an FTY of around 38 KSI. So, you would have to apply 38,000 pounds per square inch to permanently deform a piece of aluminum fencing. So you would have to hit it really hard with a hammer multiple times just to make a small dent.
So, it could take some bumps and hits from a vehicle*— it’s pretty strong. But no fence is completely immune to a car crash.
How strong are aluminum fences against the weather?
How does aluminum fencing stand up against the wind? This is called wind load. Aluminum can withstand velocities of 115 miles per hour. For context, a category two hurricane has winds of 96 – 110 mph.
A category three hurricane has winds of 111 – 129 mph. However, aluminum fencing is vulnerable to prolonged, high-speed winds such as hurricanes. So, while your aluminum fence can withstand very windy days and winter chills, it cannot protect you against a hurricane.
How do aluminum fences hold up against the cold?
Aluminum fences are a top choice for cold areas. The aluminum alloy fences are made from are very stable. The tendency for materials to expand or contract with temperature changes is called thermal expansion, and it is measured with a thermal expansion coefficient.
Have you ever noticed how powerlines sag in hot summers? Or how balloons don’t seem to get as big during the winter? That is because those materials generally have a relatively high thermal expansion coefficient.
Aluminum fencing has a low thermal expansion coefficient. So, while vinyl fences may crack or buckle— and wooden fences wrap in the heat, aluminum doesn’t. Aluminum fences are also resistant to damage from snow and ice.
How do aluminum fences hold up against rain?
One of its strongest characteristics is aluminum’s impressive resistance to rust and corrosion. When aluminum is exposed to air, it develops a natural oxide layer on its surface. This protective barrier helps prevent further oxidation. This is very important in high-humidity areas like waterfront properties. Aluminum fences have also been tested through salt fog resistance tests. This measures how resistant it is against corrosive, salty air. So, aluminum fences are ideal for coastal environments and places that experience heavy rainfall.
