Busting 5 Myths About Aluminum Fencing

We have the entire wealth of human knowledge at our fingertips. But that doesn’t mean it’s all correct. Misinformation, misconceptions, and misunderstandings are probably more prevalent than the truth!

So, let’s bust 5 persistent myths around aluminum fencing and shed light on the truth.

Myth 1: “Aluminum fencing is cheap because it’s low-quality.”

You’ve probably experienced this paradigm with other products. High-end electronics vs their cheap counterparts. Name-brand foods vs. generic brands. Brand new cars vs pre-owned rust buckets.

So you might think that since wrought iron fences are more expensive than aluminum fencing, they are better.

Fact 1: Aluminum is more affordable because of its abundance.

Aluminum is easier to procure and process than iron, making it more affordable.

Myth 2: “Aluminum fencing is lightweight, so it must be weak.”

Again, this seems intuitive on the surface. Lightweight things are easier to break. But this could not be further from the truth.

Fact 2: Aluminum is less dense than steel but is on par with its strength.

Aluminum is around 2.5 times less dense than steel. So how can it have the same strength? Well, even though we call it aluminum fencing, aluminum is just the primary ingredient. We manufacture our aluminum fencing from a very strong alloy designated 6005-T5.

It is around 98% aluminum, with around 1% being silicon and less than 1% being magnesium. That 2% makes a huge difference! These other elements create a microstructure within the aluminum.

Our aluminum alloy is also heat-treated, further bonding the elements and strengthening it.

Myth 3: “Aluminum fencing just won’t last.”

Everything rots and rusts eventually, right?

Fact 3: Aluminum is highly durable and resistant to corrosion/rust.

Wood needs coatings and finishes to prevent rot and decay. Iron is much stronger but is susceptible to rust and corrosion, especially over long periods of time.

Aluminum is naturally resistant to corrosion and rust. Aluminum fencing can last for decades! Anywhere from 30 to 50 years!

Meanwhile, you’d have to replace a wooden fence every 10 to 15 years. Wrought iron fences can also last decades, but they require more maintenance to prevent rust and corrosion.

Aluminum is susceptible to salty winds, which are most common along the coasts. However, we offer powder finishes that can help with that.

Myth 4: “Aluminum fencing is hard to dispose of.”

If aluminum is so durable, then it’s probably hard to dispose of. What do you do if you want to change or update the fencing?

Fact 4: Aluminum is highly recyclable.

Aluminum can be recycled indefinitely without diminishing its quality. So if you do ever want to replace your aluminum fencing, all you have to do is call a local recycling service.

Myth 5: “Aluminum fencing is hard to install!”

If you’ve ever built a wooden fence or welded barbed wire fencing, then you know it can be time-consuming and a pain in the butt!

Fact 5: Aluminum fencing is designed to be easily installable.

Aluminum fencing comes in modular pieces, like panels and posts, that are easy to assemble. You really only need basic tools like screws and something to screw them in with. As well as shovels to dig with. Many families can complete their aluminum fencing project in one weekend.

However, there are best practices for your DIY installation.
